    According to the complainant, the money spent sponsoring the IIFA awards, belonged to victims of the Qnet scam. He also requested for an investigation into the company’s link with Bollywood.

    The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai police has launched an inquiry into the allegation that Wizcraft International Entertainment Pvt Ltd, which organised the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards, took money from Qnet. The EOW is carrying out an investigation against Qnet for its alleged involvment in a Rs406-crore scam.

    The complaint was filed by one Gurupreet Singh Anand, alleging that the IIFA platform was being used by QNET to further its scam in India. Anand requested a thorough investigation into the trail of the money that went into the award function.

    According to the complainant, the money spent sponsoring the IIFA awards, belonged to victims of the Qnet scam. He also requested for an investigation into the company’s link with Bollywood.

    Confirming the development, joint commissioner of police (EOW) Dhananjay Kamlakar said, “We have started an inquiry into the allegations but can’t share details at this point of time.”

  • Four held in Qnet case

    Four persons have been held today for their alleged involvement in the multi-level marketing ‘Qnet’ case, police said.

    The four persons, identified as V Bal Reddy, Gautam Desai, Dasari Nagaraju and Cheemakurti Manikanta, were arrested today and Rs 15 lakh, deposited in different bank accounts, were seized from them, district Police Commissioner A

    B Venkateswara Rao said.

    The accused were nabbed by Economic Offences wing of the Commissionarate and the key person involved in the alleged fraud, Gangadhar from Vijayawada, is absconding and is currently said to be in Dubai, the senior officer said.

    The five persons were associated with multi-level international marketing firm Qnet, a company founded by one Vijay Eswaran, a Malaysian citizen based in Hong Kong, in 1998, where the company agents extracted huge money from people by offering them lucrative incentives, he said.

    The company also operated in India with other names like ‘Qen’ and ‘Quest, police said.

    Eswaran had appointed one Vihan Direct Selling, owned by Gangadhar, as the sole selling company in India, where the firm had assigned some agents to recruit salesmen under the direct selling system.

    According to police, the agents had appointed 134 first level salesmen by collecting Rs 1,16,55,000 and another 13,400 second level salesmen were joined by the 134 sales persons.

    In the meantime, one of the salesmen suspected company’s activities and lodged a complaint with the police and the four accused were arrested after investigations.

    Rao said if necessary, a red corner notice will be issued against Gangadhar.

    He said Qnet is facing many charges in the country and some of the cases against the company are pending in courts.

    A decade back, the company was involved in a Rs 11 crore case of alleged fraud in Chennai. It has also been facing some cases in Mumbai, the officer said.

    CHENNAI: In a bid to stop multi-level marketing businesses from cheating people by floating attractive but unviable schemes, the Madras High Court asked the State government to look beyond just prosecuting the offenders and to take preventive measures, including giving appropriate publicity among the public.

    The first bench comprising Chief Justice S K Kaul and Justice T S Sivagnanam passed the orders on a PIL moved by V R Othisamy seeking direction to the government to frame appropriate guidelines to prevent and stop MLM in the State.

    When the petition came up for hearing, the bench said, “The greed for extracting money without realising the pitfalls has resulted in public being misled into investing in MLM schemes.” Pyramid scheme have not proved to be sustainable.

    On friday properties worth of Rs.4.12 crores of Moonlife Teamworks India Private Limited got attached by Enforcement Directorate department at Hyderabad.

    The properties belonged to Moonlife Teamworks India Private Limited, its managing director P. Narayanachary and Sri Chandra Farms and Resorts India Limited in a MLM fraud case.

    The ED officials, in a press release, stated that the properties were attached under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

    Investigation revealed that Moonlife company, its managing director and others wrongfully gained Rs. 4.12 crore through multi-level-marketing, dealing in residential plots, they said.

    Lots of fly by night ponzi mlm schemes have duped millions of investors in India. On Thursday Reserve Bank of India notified investors against MLM companies that promise high returns and run on hefty member subscription fees.

    Any break in the chain leads to the collapse of the pyramid, and the members lower down in the pyramid are the ones that are affected the most,” the Reserve Bank of India said in a circular on Thursday.

    Multi-level marketing (MLM) is a marketing strategy in which the sales force is compensated not only for sales they generate, but also for the sales of the other salespeople that they recruit. This recruited sales force is referred to as the participant’s “downline”, and can provide multiple levels of compensation.
